The Phantom in Warsaw
Saw the Phantom of the Opera at the Roma Theatre in Warsaw last Friday night. I’m a great fan of the music and thought this was a fantastic production with impressive sets, props and acting! I have seen several shows in the West End in London and thought this was easily comparable – considerably better than CATS which we also saw recently here.

Not sure where they kept all the background sets though, they varied from tall sweeping staircases to underground dungeon scenery. Some were extremely large and they seemed to disappear into the sidings. Either the Theatre is positively massive behind the scenes or the set builders were VERY quick at constructing them… another observation – why isn’t the acting we see on Polish television as good? Supposedly most of the actors you watch on TV have had a background on stage – judging from the wooden acting in most of the Polish soaps, this is not the case! They could take a few tips from the Phantom and his rather stunning Christine (who had a very impressive soprano tone by the way – excellent timbre and dynamic control, sent shivers down my spine!).
